We really want our students to know that we believe in them and we believe in their success going forward. We're always there to greet them and ask them how they're doing, if they need anything from us We encourage the students to really talk with us and to know that we understand what they are feeling and we're here to help them. My mom and my dad they like this school because of how safe it is, how it will help us It's a small school, the teachers really care, there's discipline, they have uniforms. It's a great learning environment, great teachers. We're very focused on our students and all of their individual needs, and incorporating different cultures within our classrooms and in the school building. We want everyone to feel loved and supported, and understood and that they have a voice, and that they belong We actually are a melting pot here at Horizon, we many families from many different backgrounds. We have a lot of family nights, one per month, that helps us meet the students and their parents in a more fun environment - something that isn't so academic related. We do home visits - we actually go into the houses and meet the families, and what they're all about We do a lot of STEM, a lot of science working with that We work really hard to get our students qualified into top schools, high schools those that would be maybe a career or college path. There's a lot of opportunity now when it comes to high schools to even walk out of high school with an associates degree, so our math, science, ELA departments all try to meet what those schools would require, so that they can continue from high school, and then be college ready. So, building up the skills now so that they would be prepared to enter college in the future Our curriculum is focused on STEM, so science, technology, engineering, math, so that when they go to high school or college, they are kind of above the curve. We make sure that our students are meeting those standards for the state, so that when they go to those local area high schools they have a step up above the rest of the rest of the kids in the community that they're well on the track to go to college or trade school and be very successful that way These children are learning before these tests. They make sure that they have all the material that they need in order to overcome these tests. Ultimately, I have great goals, high goals for my son when he leaves here. So CYSP stands for the Concept Young Scholars Program, it's a program that runs throughout the year for the students. We do grades fifth through eighth, they get assigned an advisor, which is one of the teachers, and then we work with them throughout the year to reach all the different goals. They stay after school and we do study sessions and test prep to get them ready. We do many activities, we go on field trips. So there are goals for test prep, community engagement, community service, college application scholarships - they get credit for all these things. It's an amazing program that allows us to continue to build relationships outside of the walls of the classroom. But also prepare the students for whatever their future brings They also do fitness, they do field trips as well, as well as community service, so it is kind of a way to not only ensure that our students are getting that little extra help that they need, but also showing how to be active members in their community We're one of the top charter schools here in Youngstown; I think we are at four stars. I think that we are one of the top schools for Youngstown Published November 14, 2024 Print
